So, which band is your boyfriend in?

This is a full-length documentary I filmed, edited, produced and released independently. The film is about the experiences of women/gender-fluid/non-binary individuals in the UK’s underground music scenes. The documentary is DIY in its content and production, using a mix of interview footage and cutaway content. While most of the cutaway photos and videos were mine, some were contributed by members of the DIY punk scene.

Following a small-scale crowdfunding campaign of £1600, filming started in 2014 and the final cut was finished in 2017. The documentary has been shown at: Doc ‘n Roll in London and Nottingham; GRRRL Haus Cinema in Boston, USA and Berlin, Germany; Manchester Punk Fest, UK. It’s also had a number of smaller screenings in venues in the UK, Spain, Germany, Austria, Finland, Hungary, Belgium, Portugal and Australia. The project has always been not-for-profit and any funds raised from screenings etc have been given to organisations, campaigns and charities which support women/non-binary in music.

I am truly grateful to everyone who has supported this project - thank you.

The documentary was released on Amazon Prime and Vimeo On Demand in 2018.

In 2022 I decided I wanted to do a follow up project to see how/if things had progressed since the documentary was released. Rather than a film, this time I’m producing a book of photos and interviews. Some of those featured were part of the original project, and some are people I’ve met since filming. I’m aiming to publish the book next year (2025). Please feel free to follow socials for updates (@sowhichband).
